Just a little folk art history: It was in the 1970's when folk art experienced a revival and stirred up an interest in people to celebrate traditional crafts. Art festivals and exhibitions were on the rise at that time.
Growing up in the 1970s I fell in love with folk art at a very young age. My mother always had it in our home. It was either hanging on the wall or art on our kitchen mugs. I was always drawing folk art as a kid. At the time, though, I didn't know it was called that. My mom always encouraged my drawing.
In recent years, my love for folk art resurfaced itself with the movie, Maudie. It's about the life of Maud Lewis, a Canadian artist who was popular in the 1960's. I love many folk artists, but Maud Lewis will always be my favorite! If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it. Very sweet story!
I also was drawn to the clothing styles and colors of the 1970s. Bright colors, loud prints, flowers everywhere, and let's not forget bell bottoms, were just the norm of the time. You wouldn't catch me wearing that clothing today, but you might catch me watching "happy little accidents" with Bob Ross on TV from time to time.
Whether you are a fan of folk art or not, you have to admit, it is a colorful, happy art genre!
